Christy Farah - Leamington Spa
Fairly
new to the Rock 'n' Roll scene - "but I'm learning all the
time!" says Christy, a teacher from Leamington Spa.
Why
I Love Rock 'n' Roll!
As
a child I grew up listening to music from the 1950s and 60s as
both my parents loved this music. My dad was a big Johnny Cash
fan and and my mum loved Connie Frances, Roy Orbison and the Everly
Brothers to name but a few. They met at a Rock 'n' Roll club on
Clacton Pier in the early 1960s and my dad was the classic good
looking Teddy Boy - although he had to 'tone down' the hairstyle
being in the Army!
As
I got older I can remember listening to more Country and Western
music at home plus the Beatles and Rolling Stones and of course
Elvis. When I was in my teens I pretty much listened to any music
that I could dance to - Glam Rock, Disco, New Romantics, Ska etc.
and wore all the gear and copied the hairstyles - whether it suited
me or not!
But
it was the Rockabilly Revival of the late 70s early 80s that got
me back into Rock 'n' Roll again. I can remember seeing Matchbox
and The Stray Cats on Top of The Pops and thinking 'Yes' that's
what I want to listen to and look like - they were amazing. It
didn't really happen, however, as I went to live abroad for the
next 10 years and there was very little Rock 'n' Roll to be found
- it was the age of Euro Pop and club music!
About
3 years ago I went to London with a friend of mine to see a show
and mooch around the West End and we ended up at the 100 Club
on Oxford Street. There was a Rockabilly band playing - sorry
don't even remember the name - and they were fantastic, they just
blew the audience away with their raw energy and enthusiasm and
I got up there and bopped with the best of them!
It
was then that I decided I wanted to learn to jive properly and
go and see some good live Rock 'n' Roll bands at the weekend rather
than just stand in a pub and drink listening to piped music. It's
a decision I've never regretted and it's opened up a whole new
world for me - going out and seeing great bands most weekends
and meeting people who all share my love of Rock 'n' Roll.
What
more is there to say except 'Long live Rock 'n' Roll'!
